about

This is a very strong debut recording by the Artemis Orchestra, comprising ten original compositions by women composers from Perth. The selections vary in mood and approach, but together create a clear and coherent statement which leaves the listener in no doubt about the serious musical intentions of the ensemble. The group takes on odd metres, edgy harmony, counterpoint, overlapping motifs, dense textures and extended forms, which frame creative solos that are well integrated with the written material. And it all has a natural flow and compelling energy.

‘Carved from Embers’ and ‘Charcoal Hills’ express the heartbreaking relentlessness of the wildfires that Perth has experienced in recent years, while ‘Municipal Gum’ provides an anguished setting for Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s lament for the fate of a tree stuck in the city: ‘O fellow citizen, what have they done to us?’ ‘Silenced’ reflects on ‘a dark and cloudy past filled with hate and fear’ and features emotive solos on baritone sax and voice. ‘Laneway Culture’, ‘Tony Umbridge’ and ‘Granadia’ all have a Latin flavour which brings a lightness and balance to the proceedings. Strong drum solos are featured in ‘Edge of Reason’ and ‘Elephant in the Room’, while ‘The Hollow’ is a high energy number with an alto saxophone solo that just keeps on building.

This would be a CD to be proud of for any group of musicians. But the fact that Perth boasts so many highly skilled, creative and fearless women in jazz is truly impressive! Congratulations to Gemma for having the vision and commitment to bring this unique group and this exceptional project together!
